As co-founder and chief executive of a firm financed by private equity investments, government grants, a multi-national strategic partner and a public flotation, he developed and commercialised a medical device technology now in world-wide use.
He currently provides advice with respect to strategic planning, innovation commercialisation, and the management, valuation & exploitation of intellectual property in markets as diverse as aerospace, health care, semiconductor manufacturing, and analytical instrumentation, among others.
Ian is an expert in the development and commercialisation of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology. He is the author of over 50 professional publications, reviews, and monographs on the subject including articles commissioned by Scientific American and Encyclopaedia Britannica. He oversaw the installation and operation of the United States' first clinical MRI scanner and explained the then-new technology internationally via dozens of invited speaking engagements. He has also applied MRI technology to non-clinical applications, an area in which he was granted a u.s. patent in 2001.
He developed further and commercialised the research he undertook as a PhD student (under Nobel Laureate Professor Sir Peter Mansfield) via the start-up that he co-founded and managed. For this work Ian was awarded the prestigious "Rank Prize".
Ian has been elected to Fellowship of Institute of Physics for "...outstanding contribution to the profession..." and to Fellowship of the Institute of Physics & Engineering in Medicine, for "... scientific and professional attainment of outstanding merit.. ."
lan is highly experienced in the provision of consultancy in technical due diligence, intellectual property asset management, and strategy development, both in the UK and the USA.
